Challenge

The Kompogas SLO plant processes 250 cfm of biogas containing 250–450 ppm of hydrogen sulfide. To prevent corrosion in the CHP engine and meet operational and regulatory requirements, the facility needed a desulfurization system that was efficient, low‑maintenance, and environmentally responsible.

Solution

In 2018, UGN deployed the Bekom reactor paired with UgnCleanPellets®, an innovative, environmentally friendly adsorbent made from iron oxides and harmless compounds. The pellets remove H₂S through hybrid biological‑chemical reactions, offering a sustainable alternative to activated carbon.

System Highlights

  • Vessel size: 10 ft × 11 ft height (177 ft3 usable volume)
  • Pellet loading cycle: ~6 months per fill
  • Annual media requirement: 175 ft3 (2.5–5 tons)
  • Energy savings: 40–60% reduction in gas‑drying energy demand
  • CO₂ reduction: 34–68 tons annually vs. activated carbon
  • Automation: Fully integrated controls, oxygenator, condensate discharge, and a wetting system

As biogas flows through the reactor, H₂S is converted into elemental sulfur. The system’s design also cools and dehumidifies the gas stream, reducing downstream energy consumption and improving overall plant efficiency.
